Lakefield Co-Operative Nursery School (LCNS) uses a co-operative model, which means that families are actively involved in the preschool experience. Families work together to run the school as Board Members, fundraisers, maintenance crew, program preparation support, grocery shopping, etc.

Together, the families of LCNS have been successfully running the school for almost 50 years!

Children attending do not have to be toilet trained.

We offer 2, 3 and 5 day morning programs.

LCNS provides a positive and stimulating environment for children that promotes social development and enriched learning. In the child-led play based teaching model with guidance from professionally trained teachers your child will be exposed to situations that will stimulate:

●     Problem solving skills

●     Turn taking

●     Interaction with and respect for others

●     Gross-motor skill development

●     Fine-motor skill development

●     Curiosity, initiative, and independence

●     Self-esteem building

Meet our teachers!

Heather Shaw (pictured) is the current Supervisor & Head Teacher, after starting at LCNS in 2021 as the Program Assistant. She has 13 years experience teaching young children in  a variety of early years environments. Heather is an accredited Communicative Disorders Assistant with a background in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. Her work experiences in private clinics and public schools have given her a breadth of knowledge in child-led play based learning, front-line speech therapy, and occupational therapy. She believes that play is how children learn best. Her enthusiasm for early learning is evident in the caring interactions with the children, caregivers and LCNS community. Heather attended LCNS as a young child back in the 80s!

Emily Freeburn is the current RECE, joining LCNS in 2024.  She has over 15 years experience teaching young children in daycare settings, at KPRDSB and as Supervisor at Straath McLean.

PARTICIPATE IN FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES AND COMMITTEES

Fundraising allows us to cover operating expenses and also buy special items for the school. We have a variety of committees to ensure that all areas of the School run smoothly. There are approximately two to three campaigns each school year.

We participate in the Lakefield Santa Claus Parade by entering a float that is conceptualized and built by parents on the Fundraising and Maintenance Committees.

We also hold the LCNS Carnival in late Spring/early Summer! This event brings the LCNS community as well as the local community members together in support of the School.
